Episode 5

“I mentioned a while ago that I had eliminated one suspect even before I met them.”
“Yes”, Inspector Sharma said, “Who was it?”
“The mother.”
“Why?”
“Because her leg was plastered and she was limping pretty badly. There is no way that a woman of her age could climb down six floors of the building in such a short time.”
The Inspector nodded as if he knew that the mother was innocent from the very beginning.
“Okay, that still leaves us with the other five.”
“The victim owned a Nano, and he was willing to fill his car with four other people. I found that rather disturbing. There’s hardly enough space for four grown people in that car, and he was willing to accommodate five people in that car, including himself. So it seemed that one of the ‘passengers’ was lying.”
The Inspector made a face. “It is not very convincing, but let’s go with it for a while. That still leaves the wife, brother, friend and sister.”
Dharmesh nodded in acknowledgement and then continued, “It couldn’t have been the wife. It is almost impossible to climb down stairs while wearing high heels. The poor thing couldn’t even manage to run in a straight line towards us.”
Dharmesh considered the Inspector’s expressions before proceeding, “On checking Delhi’s map, I found that the nearest Salsa learning centre was nowhere near the victim’s office. It placed the sister directly inside my crosshairs.
“Rajiv also noticed that to pull a murder like that you’ll need speed and stamina, both these qualities are drilled inside one undergoing the rigorous training by these Salsa teachers.”
The Inspector was silent for some time.
“I am also inclined to think that the sister did it, but we don’t have anything concrete. What could have been the motive?”
Dharmesh smiled. “I am an Investigator not a mind-reader. I think we have more than enough reasons to take her prints and start a direct attack.”
The Inspector agreed. Now that the target was fixed, a direct approach would be less brutal for the rest of the family.

To make a long story short, Dharmesh was correct.

The sister had never been happy with her sister-in-law. She had been feeding the elder brother imaginary stories about their mother's hatred for her brother's wife. However, on seeing that no suitable action was been taken, she decided to take matters in her own hands and fixed a 'secret' meeting with the victim. What happened next was clearly not planned in advance. The sister was driven by emotions, frustration and anger. The crime showed clear signs of spontaneousness because more than enough evidence was found at the crime scene.
